Q: This Sunday in the U.S. is Mother's Day. In celebration, what are some of your favorite books with strong mother/child relationships?
I’m realizing now just how many books I read that have virtually no parental connection. It’s actually surprising how many main characters have no parents, experience some life adventure alone, have little to no parental involvement if they actually have parents, or have overbearing parents that contribute to some inner turmoil (like The Bell Jar). Where are all the good parents in literature?
I suppose A Wrinkle In Time series by Madeleine L’Engle is a good example of a strong mother and child relationship. The Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin has a few examples of such relationships. White Oleander by Janet Fitch is another good example, despite some unhealthy aspects. The bond was certainly strong. I’m not sure if this counts, but I’d say Harry Potter. Not Harry’s mother, but Ron’s. She was a good mom to all of her kids and remained active in their lives.
And just for good measure, Love You Forever by Robert N. Munsch. I’ll never forget that one.

I’m sure I’ve read others and I’ll think of them as soon as I post this, but for the life of me, I can’t think of anything else.

We chose Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire, too. It's so true that parents are frequently missing from books, especially in YA.
New GFC follower. Our FF
Molly was a mother to kids that weren't even hers as well. I would have picked Catelyn from A Song of Ice and Fire but she was so mean to Jon Snow. I couldn't do it. But thanks for stopping by our FF. New follower.
Not many books came to mind for me either when this question came up. Thanks for becoming a follower of my blog! I'm now following you back via GFC and wish you a Happy Reading Weekend.
The Scarf Princess
Ron and his mom are a great choice! Check out my FF @ http://best-of-ya.blogspot.com/2012/05/feature-follow-friday-20.html. I'm a new follower, by the way! :)
I loved Love You Forever!! I had one of my parents read it to me every night when I was little. It will always be a favorite.
Oh my goodness! That book always made me want to cry as a kid. I still have trouble looking at my copy.
My follow friday. Please visit!
I dare say that every mother in the world who has read LOVE YOU FOREVER to her young child will never forget it (nor will she forget the repeated sentimental reaction to reading it). Interesting choices.
